The Hustle Boyz - Orangeburg, SC

Only a few months after Carolina Hu$tle's beginning, the Hustle Boyz became very good acquaintances. They helped Carolina Hu$tle by providing music (good music at that), contacts, and networking opportunities. For this we thank them; Dot (left), and Flames (right). To be included in the the Hustle Boyz's camp is A.B.S. Entertainment's C.E.O. and President, Eqwon and Cal, respectively.

The Hustle Boyz have been grinding with their music for over seven years. After staying in ATL for a while, they came back to South Carolina. Their business venture in ATL led them to come back to their home state and promote in their hometown. This also allowed them to build better relationships with people in the area and abroad. "Chocolate Girl" was circulating on Columbia, SC's local radio stations in 2007 and also was their first single being pushed.

Dot: "We continued to do tracks for DVD's and publishing works. We ran into DJ Dirty one day and started talking about mix tapes. We ran into Lil Ru at a local show and made arrangements to do a track with him. Two days after we did the track with Lil Ru, he got signed to Def Jam. We leaked out the track with Lil Ru, 'Grindin,' and began pushing the record more after it's leak. Throughout the time of us completing the mix cd, we got a lot of features with artists throughout South Carolina; building our name up."

The mix tape "Do You See Me Now" was finished early 2009, with hit singles:

  • Grindin - featuring Lil Ru
  • Chocolate Girl
  • Swag Out
  • Whole Lotta - featuring Marly Mar

What was your motivation for "This is How We Do?" That is my favorite track!

Flames: My motivation was "Now," the recession, how everything is now. You gotta do it for yourself. It's one the realest tracks. When people ask about the Hustle Boyz, that explains us. "I gotta dot his for me and no-one else, they don't understand so I do this for self..."

Flames, what do you think of Dot's style?
"I think his style is full of swagger. Thats Dot's style, he stay fresh, and he's a laid back dude. It's unique, he's versatile. He has swag without telling you in every verse. You just hear it!"

Dot, what do you think of Flame's style?
"He got a strong ass style. He puts a lot of energy into his flow. He's a cross between a lyrical rapper and a Dirty South artist. He's the definition of a Dirty South artist."

I've seen more people in your crew Who els is on your team besides the ones who make up A.B.S. Entertainment?

    Lo-Keys - Fayetteville, NC

Fayette-Nam is in the Carolina Hustle BUILDING!!!! Yes, we have First in Flight Recording artist, Lo-Keys in the spotlight! Sit back, relax, and get ready to cruise at an altitude you've never been at before. Lo-Keys has some good things to say about the Carolinas and the movement we are in.

How did you come about finding Carolina Hustle?
I found out about Carolina Hustle in the later part of 2009. My manager had brought it up to me saying that many artist throughout the Carolinas were using it as a major networking tool and it was gaining a lot of followers on the web. So I gave him the go to sign up for it, and here we are today.

What does Carolina Hustle mean to you?
Well I think the Carolina Hustle defines North Carolina. You see everyone in the Carolinas hustling one way or another you know. Whether your rapping, hooping, or selling Bootleg merchandise it seems as if everyone in the Carolinas is hustling. So I believe that’s where the phrase comes from. As far as defining it I see it as meaning everyone has ambition. The ambition to make it to the top by any means necessary.

I got a chance to hear your interview on The Lyfestyle Radio with Ms. Chriss. You explained your situation about changing record labels. Do you mind explaining more in depth?
Changing record labels is a difficult thing. My manager and I were at Nam Records for 2 years. When they met me I was very young; I'd say around seventeen. I was very hungry for the music. The passion I had for it was undeniable so they took a chance with me and I took a chance with them. I recorded my first mixtape with them and everything was good. Then as tables turned they were asking me to record certain songs, dress a certain way and do things that I was not accustom to. After a lot of meetings and arguments I parted ways with them. The wheels were just stuck in the mud. They wanted me to act a certain way and make a certain brand of songs and I just couldn’t do it. I don’t believe that’s the way to go. Gimmicks get ripped apart after awhile, and I'm no gimmick or game. The streets is [are] serious and I can't run around being something im not. So after 2 years the last year I became real stagnant. By stagnant I just mean in one place. Not showing up for studio sessions, not returning phone calls and finally we lost contact. During the last year of that, Rain and I had became real good friends and let me stamp the music with the First in Flight logo. I create the music I want over here. No restrictions. So if I'm feeling a certain type of way and make a club song then I want to make a song about my life it’s all good and music is based off emotion. I like to think of it as “Another song done, another thought captured.”

Nowadays, race isn’t even a factor when it comes to Hip Hop. Have you come across anyone who thinks otherwise?
Actually, I haven’t come across anyone who thinks it’s a problem. Well at least not anyone that would say it to my face. I can’t change anything that’s happened in the past. I understand people have history. So if anyone does think like that I understand their opinion and I respect it. Sometimes there is nothing you can do to change a person’s way of thinking. I understand people come from different generations, so people in my generation don’t have the same mindset as people that come from our parent’s generation. I look at it as “different times, different ways.” So, to anyone who may think I have no place in music, the way I have it, I would encourage them to listen to my music and try to understand my story and where I come from because talent is undeniable.

What do you feel needs to change in your market (NC) and what needs to change in the Carolina (NC & SC) market as a whole?
I think radio has to change. Program directors have to play Carolina music. Spins create record deals. So that’s what’s missing here. As a whole I can’t really tell you what needs to change. Over the last year or so I have seen a lot of North Carolina and South Carolina artist working together. We get nominated at a lot of their award shows and such. So I have seen a lot of progression over the last year or so with the two states and peoples views. It’s a good thing for the Carolina’s as a whole.

What would you like to see happen for the two states for the rest of the year?
Well I would love to see us get our well deserved spot in the industry. Like I said before “talent is undeniable” so I know they are looking it’s just the fact of actually convincing someone to put the money behind you for that major push. That’s the tuff thing. I would also like to see more North Carolina and South Carolina Djs working together. Creating mixtape’s to flood the streets with Carolina artist. The More we work together the more gaps we bridge, which in turn is more progression for the state.

Independent or Major? What are your views on the two?
Well I would go with major to be honest. Even though now on a major you still have to do as much footwork as an artist on an independent label the brand means so much. Major labels hold a weight that independent labels don’t. That can range anywhere from the promotion funds, air time and also how much you can actually charge promoters for a show, so there are many benefits of being on a major label rather then independent. However I don’t see anything wrong with independent labels but if I had to pick from the two I would recommend a major in all cases.

What in 2009 are you going to bring with you into 2010?
I’m bringing First in Flight with me. That’s the team. So no matter what years change into we are family. God willing we will get on together and leave the game together.
What in 2009 are [did] you leaving in 2009?
Well that’s a hard question. (laughs) I guess I’m going to leave my anger with some people behind. I recently did a new song called “Forgive and Forget” and that talks a lot about some of the issues I had in the past with people and how I’m willing to let it go and start over fresh. I’m not saying everyone deserves a second chance, I’m saying I’m willing to leave it behind.

Shout outs, what to look out for, new music, DVDs, Videos, etc…
Always. Look for the new project I have coming out in 2010 with Dj Messiah entitled “From Dusk Till Dawn” I’m going to have a lot of heat on there for the streets. Coming into that you guys will see more videos from me on the blogs and in studio sessions of me creating the actual project. As always you can hop on most blogs and catch the leaks that come out and new freestyles as well and most of the time if Rain is showing up in your town ill be there baby. Big Shout out to CarolinaHustle.com, TheLyfestyle.com, Rap Soulution Magazine, First in Flight Entertainment, Dj Messiah, and the whole North Carolina. We going in!!!! 2010 is going to be big.

    Boss G - Columbia, SC

The Boss of the Goons is FINALLY on Carolina Hu$tle!!! No time to waste, commence to reading!

What does Boss G stand for?
    Boss of the Goons

I hear you call yourself the "King of South Cak", are you worthy of that title and why not someone who's been in the game longer? I feel like the older homies in the SC industry had their chances to lead and no one stepped up and the person they chose fell short! You gotta be built strong to lead and I'm conditioned for it! I sat back in '09 and gave everybody a chance to lead and no one stepped up now I'm going for the throne!

How did you start rapping and when? Towards the end of '07, I started. I had two artists who weren't working hard enough to my satisfaction. So I went to Marvelous J. and brought my first beat.

So, where you rapping before '07? No, not at all, all the songs on my "Rookie of the Year" mixtape were my first recordings!!

So what were you doing before rapping? I was a party promoter; planner and I had a few business ventures!

You are new to the game, so how did you get to the level of creativity you are at being a rookie?
I always had a adventurous mind and I feel like I done lived one hell of a life, that always helps!

So what's your story?... Single family home, coming from nothing to something, overcoming obstacles... raised in the projects. We moved from projects to basically a shack. It had a tin roof and cinderblocks. When my mom [got] married, it got a little better.

What was or is the whole beef with you and Lil Ru? He got on a independent dvd and talked down on me and a few SC artist. He's a decent artist and I hope he succeeds in life. (uh huh...)

What is up with you and the clubs? Why do you keep getting bannedDifferent situations for different clubs, fights are usually the reason and its usually like 50-100 of us so it always seem like a big problem.

Out of all of the 2009 controversies in SC Hip Hop, what 2 stood out to you the most? Which one affected you the most? The whole Sc vs Lil Ru situation and the. Head hunter vs Lil Ru situation.. I say the HH one affected me the most cuz they apart of my Moneybags fam now so we all in for one another!

What advise do you have for striving artists who are trying to at least make it to your level in the game? If you don't know, you do have some clout!
Never ruin relationships wit people in the industry that's what the game is based on and basically just stay at it day in and day out, and keep a positive outlook cuz this is a rocky game!

What do you say to those artists who feel "frustrated" from being ignored or not noticed by the masses. I was ignored and not noticed in SC, so I put my movement in their face! Now I gotta do it in the next state cause I'm nobody in the next state! You gotta keep pushing strong until you get a national buzz!

What was in 2009 that you want to keep moving forward with in 2009? My work ethic, I'm up working while the competition is sleep! I got that killer instinct for this industry! Sucess is a obligation and failure is not a option!

What was in 2009 that you feel you need to change in 2010? I gotta go harder on the web the new age of promotion is online and I definately need to step that up! But we [are] definitely still gonna flood the streets!

What are your expectations of 2010; for personal and business life? Just having a sucessful year and hopefully landing a major situation rather it be distrubution or a multi album situation.

So what can we be on the lookout for next? 5 - 10 Mix Tapes10 Street videos. I'm coming out with a DVD. My album "2516" coming out late this year (2010). Also I got to offers to star in 2 independent films so u can expect those coming soon too. You can also expect us to be the biggest and strongest movement SC has ever seen!!

Any special shout outs? Yeah shout out to all the Carolina djs without yall the movement can't grow, all the indie Carolina artists, the whole Carolinas, Head Hunter fam, Fast Money Boyz, Moneybags Ent, Quantum Beats

    Pro Black - Texana, NC

It's good when bloggers, website owners, and different organizations can come together for the same cause; to uplift their market. Pro Black is not only a Hop Hop group out of Durham, NC, but they also manage the website, www.carolinaallday.com, which is becoming notorious in the Carolinas. Besides telling us about themselves as artists, Pro Black gave us an inside view of what Carolina All Day is up to and what is to come in the near future.

    How was Pro Black formed?
Black – We cousins, so we been together forever. We started playin’ around freestylin’ in 1999 but not really takin’ it serious, then we got a buzz through local battles in our hometown of Murphy, NC (Texana to be exact) and that’s what motivated us to really get serious and focus on rhyme concepts and proper formats for writing lyrics and using metaphors to enhance our verses. When the money stacked up from “side projects,” we bought ProTools and all the equipment to make professional sounding music. From then on.… it’s been on and poppin’.

Pro – I’ve know Black since before this music shit obviously being family.  Our whole crew is really FAM, so we handle our business differently than most people.  We are all about loyalty.  We do this 24/7 so if you don’t want to be down all the way, don’t be down at all.  That is our approach to our music and our business.

What do you consider to be Pro Black's style of music and what makes it different from most of the other music in the Hip Hop industry?
Black– We got our own style of music PERIOD!!! We try to incorporate a little of everything to catch the ear of all audiences. It’s very hard to differentiate the style of any new artist out because they follow the pattern or clichés of their respected location. West – very strong and melodic piano sounds, East – more lyrical and metaphorical, MidWest – Country with a blend of city swag, South – very bassy, jazzy and slow. Mix all that together like ya favorite pot of gumbo and you got ProBlack’s Style.

Who are some artists within the Carolinas and in other states you've collaborated with? Who would you like to work with?
Black – We like to keep our music in-house collab’n with Carolina All Day artists like J-Remy, Buki, and S.I.R. (Streetz Iz Real). Although we are working on a Carolina Anthem called Carolina Bounce Remix with an all-star cast of some of NC & SC’s hottest, so be on the lookout for that coming to a radio station near you.

Pro – And we have the “Carolina All Day” mixtape series where we feature artists from across the Carolinas.  If we haven’t worked with your favorite, then get at us and we definitely will.  We are all about the entire area getting shine, not just “ProBlack.”

    Tell me about CarolinaAllDay.com
Pro – We created the website because we knew how hard it was for artists in the Carolinas to get noticed.  Our vision was to start an online promotional tool that could help elevate the Carolinas to a prominent level in the music industry.  We have a monthly featured artists, constant new interviews, promotion of flyers for Carolina parties, new videos from Carolina artists, Beam’s Top 5 of the Week, and sponsor events throughout North & South Carolina.  If you are interested in doing any kind of legit business, email us at Management@CarolinaAllDay.com and we can go from there.

CarolinaAllDay.com is [was] nominated for an award for the SEA's. Congratulations!! Why do you think you were nominated and how does it feel to be nominated?
Pro – I think we were nominated because people are starting to show us love for representing the Carolinas.  We have been doin this for a long time so it feels good to get recognition for your hard work.  We are making connections everyday to expand the marketability of all Carolina artists.  With our without the acknowledgment, we are going to continue reppin our state!

Black – I feel like we got a good chance of winning this award even though we are in a category with some great sites like AllHipHop and WorldStarHipHop.com. Within our first year of creation we have increased site statistics by over 150% and still rising.

    What can we expect next?...
Pro – You can expect everything from us in the future.  More music of course, be on the lookout for the next “ProBlack” mixtape, J-Remy’s next mixtape (No Chaser), and more from the Carolina All Day “State 2 State” Series.  You can listen to any ProBlack/Carolina All Day mixtapes on Datpiff or on the “Carolina All Day” website.  CarolinaAllDay.com is better than ever and we have many updates coming soon!  Shout out to Ma Official and CarolinaHustle.com for the interview.  We are about the BUSINESS and UNITY!  You will hear from us constantly in the future.

Black – NUFF SAID! Carolina All Day!
